Silliness in Metal: Writing Fun Music in a Heavy Genre

Now Playing: Ask A Silly Question by Elvenking

Something I feel is underrated and not discussed enough is the necessity for levity and silliness in metal. Not to be confused with meme or shitpost metal, because that’s an entirely different thing.

As metal is often a very serious genre, I generally find that it can be hard to only hear that. We need a bit of everything to appreciate the intricacies of both the good and the not so good. As such, I think that a bit of silliness from an otherwise serious band can be a fun contrast to the main style.

Writing and listening to serious songs all the time can get tiring, so sometimes you need to listen to a song about playing being a little bit silly (Ask A Silly Question) or having your funeral be too somber and your ghost bitching out the guests for not looking lively enough (Not My Final Song). Or even writing songs about serious topics in a shitpost way (Winged Hussars).

Basically, metalheads need to embrace the inherent silliness of life a little more and bring it into the music more often. It would make everything more interesting.
