September High Day: The Autumn Equinox

Now Playing: Dear Fellow Traveller by Sea Wolf

The autumn equinox is an interesting time. While it is also the balance of night and day that marks the beginning of autumn and the lead up to winter, it is also a midpoint of harvest season, especially for more northern countries where the onset of cold weather and snow may be much quicker.

With this midpoint in the harvest season, we get apples. (I haven’t gotten to enjoy any myself quite yet, but I do plan to do something with that soon.)

Ciders (both hard and non-alcoholic) are also a fun treat that are seasonally appropriate. I have a preference for hard ciders, but I would also like to have some non-alcoholic cider this year. Some of my favourite cider brands include No Boats on Sunday (they have some really tasty flavours, including peach and the summer seasonal flavour of wild strawberry) and Don’t Poke The Bear (a fun brand from my home province).

Aside from fun seasonal treats, I tend to see autumn (and spring, but that’s not the main focus here) as a transition period. It’s often the start of a new school year, a fresh harvest, and the leaves are changing and falling. It’s a sign that a new season is coming.

I enjoy autumn a lot, and I think more people should appreciate it for what it is.
