Now Playing: The Moon and Magic by Elvenking
So this is something I’ve told friends about, but I don’t know if I’ve ever brought it up here. It’s just a fun little look at how practices can collide in unexpected ways.
For context with this story, I’ve been working with Loki for a while, think like a year and a half. (He’s been bugging me for longer, I’m sure, but it’s been mutual for a year and a half or so.) My partner, we’ll call them Willow, because that’s their name, has been working with Cernunnos for a good long while, at least as long as I’ve known them, and probably longer.
Now, we’re coming up on 2 years knowing each other, having met when the official Elvenking Instagram account reposted their story right around the time of Spotify Wrapped back in 2024, and I decided “you seem interesting, what’s your deal?” Not long after this, we started becoming friends, and very quickly found that we’re both pagans, as well as our respective leans.
Now, I wasn’t expecting anything out of this. I was going into it with a “whatever happens, happens” attitude. So we spend a few months chatting and sending memes back and forth, as you do. We’re also joking about how it would be kinda funny if our respective deities showed up in each other’s practices. Everything’s normal so far, right? Wrong!
Mid June, I’m in a ritual for the summer solstice with Virtual Fire Protogrove and I’m just sitting there, going through the little meditation that was part of it, as I had been doing in the other rituals I had attended up until this point. I feel it important to note here that Loki has a very strong presence, and if that bitch (affectionate) is in your practice somewhere, you damn well know it. So during this particular ritual, when I felt a very strong presence right next to me, I knew immediately, because of my established relationship with Loki, that this was not her. Somehow, some way, I knew immediately that it was Cernunnos.
I freak out a bit, because I’m not expecting a new (to me) deity to just show up and park his furry horned ass in my practice unannounced. I decide “I have to leave you on spiritual read for like a week” and then promptly forget about the encounter. About a month or so later, Sunshine and I are going up to visit some family for my birthday weekend in small town Quebec, and the quickest way to get there was l’autoroute 50. Now, as you’re leaving Ottawa/Gatineau on the 50, one of the first signs you encounter is is one of those watch for deer signs. I’ve been by this sign hundreds of times in my life, and never once before has it been anything of particular note. It’s always just been a sign that you see sometimes in Canada, because we have deer and, more importantly, we have moose. This particular drive, however, the sign grabbed my attention, and I decided to finally reach back out to Cernunnos, and thus started that relationship.
At this point, we thought it would be really funny if Loki jumped over to Willow’s practice, but we largely forget about it for a while and things are mostly normal. Then, one day, about another half year later, I get a message that says “it happened, it finally fucking happened” and when I ask what the whole grain, gluten free fuck they’re talking about, they eventually spit it out and tell me that Loki visited them in their dreams the previous night. I had my moment of “Jesus fuck, Loki, that’s where you’ve been” and then we’ve been laughing about it since.
So yes, Loki and Cernunnos are both very strong personalities, but in very different ways. Loki has the arrogance, and Cernunnos brings the force. You’d think it’s scary, but it’s more tiring than anything else. You’d be surprised at how regularly I have to tell them to stop fucking arguing and getting jealous over each other. I’m just a guy, and they’re out here arguing over who deserves my time more. I don’t have the energy for that, come on.
Anyway, I’m going to try to see what they want today. Embrace your wyrd. Three ways to magick.
